Last Thursday, Oct. 21, tragedy struck on the set of “Rust” when Alec Baldwin was handed a ‘prop’ gun by Assistant Director Dave Halls and accidentally shot and killed Halyna Hutchins, the film’s cinematographer. 

Hutchins was standing several feet away from Baldwin next to the camera when he pulled the trigger and she was fatally shot in the chest. Investigators say the bullet passed through Hutchins and then wounded the director, Joel Souza.

Police officials have confirmed there were live rounds in the firearm. Hutchins was pronounced dead at the hospital and Souza was released from the hospital with an arm brace following his injury. 

Halls has confessed to investigators that he ultimately failed to comply with his duties of checking the gun before handing it over to Baldwin.

Baldwin has written a statement to the public expressing that he is “fully cooperating with police officials” and that he is openly in contact with Hutchins’ husband providing his undivided support for his entire family. Halyna’s husband is overwhelmed with grief, according to Baldwin. 

On Saturday, the 63-year-old actor told photographers he is not allowed to make comments on the ongoing investigation.

“I’ve been ordered by the sheriff’s department in Santa Fe,” he said.

Many have related this horrific tragedy to Brandon Lee, son of actor Bruce Lee, on the set of “Crow” movie where an accidental shooting took place in 1993. Lee’s family has reached out to the Hutchins family offering their support and condolences.
