Confidence is running high as Rowan University’s men’s track & field team returns to action for the indoor season. The team is looking to build off a historic season that saw the Profs’ 4×400 meter relay team capture a national title.
“We return everybody from the National Championship 4×4 last year,” Head Coach Dustin Dimit said. “We’re lucky enough to have enough depth that I think if we were allowed we could have two 4×4 relays at nationals because we have eight guys that are that good.”
One of those eight guys is freshman Tre Stevenson, who transferred in the middle of last year and was able to find his stride at the end of the 2022 outdoor season.
“He transferred from a Division I in Louisiana,” Coach Dimit said. “He didn’t have all of the work we would have liked him to have, and then by outdoor he was hitting on all cylinders so he is excited to start racing… His main event is only an outdoor event but we think he can do something in the 400 indoors as well and possibly be one of the pieces that is on that 4×4 at times.”
Stevenson has worked hard over the offseason and has high expectations for himself and this team.
“I’m looking to better myself as always. I want to keep getting better, I’ve been training really hard,” Stevenson said. “We have an amazing team coming in from last year, especially with the strength that we have.”
The team’s main strength continues to be its depth. As the season progresses, they believe it will help them pull away from the pack.
“We had a couple guys graduate last year and we’ll miss those guys but we had just as many good guys come in and some good transfers,” Coach Dimit added. “We’re real excited for the depth, we added depth in areas where we didn’t have it last year. Last year Marquise [Young] was our only high hurdler and this year we’ll have six or seven of those guys and we think three or four at least could make nationals.”
The Profs’ mentality has not changed from last season. After winning the national title in the 4×400 relay, their goals have only gotten bigger.
“We just expect everybody to embrace that championship mentality and that championship culture that we have here,” Coach Dimit said. “They’ve been looking good in workouts and feeling strong… we know we have the pieces to be a top-four team at nationals.”
The Profs head to Staten Island on Friday, Dec. 2, for the FastTrack Opener where their national title quest begins.
“I feel like we have a young, very hungry team,” Stevenson said. “We’re ready to go win a national championship. I feel like we’re ready to compete with the best and be the best.”
