The Rowan women’s lacrosse team ran into a juggernaut in No. 2-ranked The College of New Jersey on Tuesday night. The brown and gold were shut down offensively and couldn’t do much to slow down the Lions’ attack, ultimately losing 9-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference battle.
It was the first time Rowan did not register a goal in a contest since 1988.
TCNJ scored just over two minutes into the game. Ten minutes later, the Lions got their second.
By halftime, the Profs found themselves down 7-0.
“We came out passive in the first half,” head coach Lindsay Delaney said. “We were on our heels defensively, didn’t do well transitionally and that’s where we lost it.”
One of the big deciding factors in the game was Rowan’s -7 turnover differential. Delaney said that the turnovers were “100 percent” a big issue for the team.
“We knew it was going to be a tough team,” senior defender Jess Casterline said. “We prepared for what we knew, how they played and we knew we had to stay focused the whole time.”
That focus shined through in the second half when they allowed only two goals.
Despite the loss, the Profs still find themselves at 2-1 in NJAC play with three games to go, all in conference. Rowan is tied for third with Kean University; the two teams are set to face off next.
“They’re crucial [games] for us to be ranked higher in the NJAC but I think that we’ll pull out the rest of the wins,” Casterline said. “I believe in our team.”
