The Heritage Dairy Store on Main Street found itself in quite the pickle on Sunday, Feb. 25, when a man decided to film himself plunging his head into the pickle barrel inside the store.
In response to the incident, the Glassboro Police Department posted a statement to Facebook and Instagram on Tuesday, March 5, asking for the public’s help in identifying the pickle plunger.
“Sometimes there are no appropriate words for the actions one takes. This gentleman decided to walk into Heritage’s and dunk his head in the large bin of pickles, which caused the store to have to remove them for sale,” the Glassboro PD said in the social media posts. “We are withholding the video since he was apparently videoing the incident himself with his cell phone, probably for ‘likes,’ and we do not want to give him more attention than he deserves.”
The man turned himself into the Glassboro Police Department, but his identity has not been revealed.
“We certainly relish the community’s help in bringing attention to the pickle we were in yesterday when trying to identify the young man involved in the incident at the Heritage’s store in town. We are happy to report that he personally called and took accountability for his actions,” the Glassboro PD said in a statement posted to Facebook the following day on Wednesday, March 6.
A video submitted to Fox29 shows the pickle perpetrator in action, a social media stunt that Glassboro PD says is, in fact, a crime. While it may not seem like a big “dill,” the prank forced the store to replace the $52 worth of pickles.
Freshman environmental science major Desiree Bauer is an employee at Heritage’s in Pitman, New Jersey. As someone who has worked shifts at one of the Glassboro locations of the convenience store, she says she was disheartened by the pickle man’s actions and the unnecessary food waste he created.
“As a Heritage’s employee, my first reaction was, ‘What was going through this guy’s mind when choosing to dunk his head in the pickle barrel?’” Bauer said. “His actions resulted in a whole barrel of pickles being thrown out, and as a Rowan student majoring in environmental science, I shake my head at all that food wasted.”
Now with a fresh new barrel of pickles, and a story that will last a lifetime, the Glassboro Heritage’s looks to put this incident behind them– relishing in the fact that “Pickle Pete” is no longer on the prowl.
