Week 1 of the NFL season is in the books and we have finally gotten a look at all 32 teams in action. Some teams produced surprising results while others looked exactly how we expected them to. Throughout the course of the season, I want to give my thoughts on how the hierarchy of the NFL is looking, starting off by ranking my top 10 teams heading into Week 2.
10. Cincinnati Bengals: Cincy struggled mightily in a loss to the lowly Patriots, however, I’m not ready to overreact. The Bengals are notorious for their slow starts to seasons and I believe they have enough talent to get back on track, albeit in a tough week two matchup at Kansas City.
9. Dallas Cowboys: Newly paid Dak Prescott and the Cowboys put together a strong Week 1 performance against Cleveland, getting contributions from the offense, defense, and special teams. I still have some questions about Dallas, notably the run game but was still overall impressed watching them on Sunday. Look for more of the same this week against New Orleans.
8. Houston Texans: C.J. Stroud picked up right where he left off last season while also getting contributions from Stefon Diggs and Joe Mixon. The defense, particularly the secondary needs some tuning up but Houston’s offense looks like it can score with anyone. Stroud and company will get a chance to show out in an upcoming primetime matchup this Sunday against Chicago.
7. Baltimore Ravens: Baltimore dropped their first game of the season, although losing to the back-to-back champs is nothing to be ashamed of. The Ravens were an Isaiah Likely toe from forcing overtime and will have an opportunity on Sunday to get right against Las Vegas.
6. Miami Dolphins: Miami looked sluggish coming out of the gates but used a fumble forced at the goalline followed by an 80-yard Tyreek Hill touchdown to jumpstart the comeback against Jacksonville. Miami now looks to carry their momentum in a Thursday night divisional matchup against Buffalo.
5: New York Jets: Aaron Rodgers had flashes of brilliance in his return to football after last year’s Achilles injury, yet the Jets weren’t able to stay competitive in a Monday night loss to San Francisco. The talent is still there, however, and New York should fare much better this Sunday in a matchup against Tennessee.
4. Detroit Lions: Detroit found themselves in a back-and-forth matchup against the Rams before pulling out a gritty win that head coach Dan Campbell will be proud of. Star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown was held to only three catches and Detroit will look to get him more involved this week against Tampa Bay.
3. Philadelphia Eagles: Saquon Barkley found the endzone three times in his debut performance as the Eagles held off the Packers in a tight contest down in Brazil. It wasn’t pretty at times as Jalen Hurts was too careless with the football and the defense was repeatedly gashed for big plays, but the high-end talent that will carry Philly was certainly on display. The Eagles will look to play a more complete game on Monday Night Football against Atlanta.
2. San Francisco 49ers: San Francisco looked like its dominant self against the Jets, even with the absence of Christian McCaffrey. Backup running back Jordan Mason filled in and had a career night, as the entire offense clicked all night long. The 49ers look to continue their strong play against Minnesota on Sunday.
1. Kansas City Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs reminded the rest of the league why they are back-to-back defending Super Bowl champs, handling a good Ravens team in the first game of the season. As long as Kansas City keeps winning, nobody will take the top spot in these rankings with them. The Chiefs will host a familiar opponent, the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
