Avant Magazine is where students can get involved and improve their writing skills. It helps get stories published for others to check out some of the main headlines and stories going around the school.
It’s a club that’s run by students and has been around for a very long time.
“Avant is the second oldest club on Rowan’s campus,” Senior, Editor-in-Chief for the Avant Literacy Magazine Steven Flickinger said. “What’s allowed us to grow is just our ability to foster a good community in the writing portion of the campus and be able to make everyone feel welcome.
There is a big difference between writing today and what it was in the past. There are so many technology resources and diverse ways to communicate on how they can offer more students to join a writing program that may interest them.
“Something we’re trying to do more recently is update our presence online,” Flickinger said “Rather than only having print issues, we’re trying to make it easier to publish our magazines online and on our social media which makes it easier for people to find.”
“The writing arts department is used for so many talented people in it,” Junior, Assistant Editor for the Avant Literary Magazine Adam Buckley said. “These magazines are proof that in college you can get writing experience and certainly get your work published.”
On campus here at Rowan, there are many writing resources available for students to take advantage of and see what they may have to improve on, whether it’s something for class or a club like Avant that can help them become better writers.
It helps with getting the most experience possible and learning from mistakes that can be learned from in the future for all writers.
“Avant gives everybody a voice, it helps them express themselves in ways like poetry and pros.” Junior, Layout Editor, Samantha Szumloz said. “They want to write, they want to do something like this but are afraid and Avant is just a real comfortable environment.”
Students who get involved early to begin writing but who haven’t written magazines usually can take some time to get more comfortable. It’s mainly about getting the experience that can only help them in the long run.
“I think it’s great for everybody on campus who reads us to see what people on campus are writing and what they are writing about, ” Flickinger said. “There’s a lot of talent on our campus when it comes to writing.”
The Avant Literary magazine is just another reliable resource on Rowan’s campus for students to help with their writing abilities and what writing magazines are all about.
The Avant Magazine club meets every Wednesday from 7-9 pm in James Hall in room 2101. The rest of the E-board members of the program are Assistant Editor Megan Nielson, Senator Jack Long, Treasurer Daniel Lorris, and Social Media Coordinator Emily Carabasi.
The E-board is made up of entirely students to help them improve their writing. This is another club for students who want to get into the writing department and build up their resumes.
