As the WNBA playoffs are approaching, the big question on everyone’s mind is who will be victorious in this year’s Rookie of the Year race.
This year’s race has prompted so much commentary on social media, which has given the WNBA the publicity it deserves. The top players that have been on many people’s radar are Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever and Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky. Both players are breaking records and have received Rookie of the Month honors.
The frontrunner Caitlin Clark was the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft. She has set the record of most assists in a season by a rookie and is on the right track to break the overall record. Her accolades don’t just stop there. Clark is the only rookie in WNBA history to drop a triple-double and she’s already on her second one. Clark has also become the fastest player to reach 100 made three-pointers. Clark has also played a major role for the Fever, leading the team to its first playoff spot after eight years.
We can’t forget about what Angel Reese has been achieving either. Even though she announced on X that her season must be wrapped up prematurely due to an injury, what she accomplished must not be forgotten. In 34 games she is seen to be one of the greatest rebounders the league has ever seen. She totaled 446 rebounds, which was the most in one season in the history of the WNBA, and recorded 26 double-doubles, the most by a rookie. Reese is also the first player in WNBA history to have three straight games with 20 or more rebounds, and she holds a 15-game double-double streak that is league record-breaking.
The Sky are still in battle for the final playoff spot, however, we must see how they finish without their Rookie of the Year candidate. In the end, only one player can be Rookie of the Year. Who do you think it will be?
