Welcome back to another edition of 90’ Minute. This column will provide a comprehensive overview of the standings, scores, upsets, and upcoming matches for both men’s and women’s Division I soccer. I will share predictions and periodically spotlight key players who made a significant impact this past week.
We saw a considerable number of shifts this week in the standings for men’s soccer. Teams around the nation were looking to keep their winning streak rolling this week, while others wanted to shake unfortunate outcomes from last week. As the season continues, the teams in each conference continue to be aggressive.
Look at the key men’s soccer scores and matchups you might have missed:
– Pittsburgh vs Denver (2-0) Oct. 7
– Stanford vs SMU (2-2) Oct. 11
Although a few are displayed, the current rankings were shaken by many changes. This week, the men’s league had its share of upsets. Unexpected results echoed throughout the conferences, some coming as a surprise.
Here are the upsets:
– Virginia vs No. 8 James Madison (1-0) Oct. 8
– No. 11 Seton Hall vs Stony Brook (1-2) Oct. 8
– Cal vs No. 1 Pittsburgh (1-0) Oct. 11
– UCLA vs No. 2 Ohio State (2-1) Oct. 11
– Michigan State vs No. 25 Wisconsin (2-0) Oct. 11
– Kansas City vs No. 3 Denver (1-0) Oct. 12
– Duquesne vs No. 13 George Mason (2-1) Oct. 12
At a moment’s notice, any team can beat the odds and show that they deserve the chance to contend in the postseason. These upsets are a prime example of this. So far the season has left many predictions of who will compete in the college cup up for discussion.
On the women’s side, here are some scores and matchups:
– Duke vs Stanford (4-1) Oct. 10
– North Carolina vs Cal (1-0) Oct. 10
The women’s league had its share of upsets which contributed to the change in standings for some teams.
Last week’s upsets included:
– Virginia Tech vs No. 6 Florida State (3-2) Oct. 6
– Minnesota vs No. 8 Ohio State (3-2) Oct. 10
– Wisconsin vs No. 9 Iowa (2-1) Oct. 10
– Wyoming vs No. 11 Utah State (2-0) Oct. 10
These highly rated teams had a rough showing but are looking to hit the ground rolling again come next week.
Let us look at the Top 10 Division 1 men’s teams according to United Soccer Coaches:
- Pittsburgh – Unfortunately, coming off a loss Friday, the Panthers have a record of 10-2-0. Monday, Oct. 14 they will stand against High Point.
- Ohio State – With a record of 9-1-2, the Buckeyes plan to come back stronger following their loss to UCLA. Their next match is against the University of Wisconsin on Oct. 19.
- Denver – The Pioneers following Saturday’s match against Kansas City are currently 7-2-4. They will play against Omaha this week on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
- West Virginia – The Mountaineers are still undefeated with a record of 8-0-3. On Friday, Oct. 11 the team won against Georgia Southern. They face Dayton on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
- Stanford – Stanford boasts a record of 8-1-3. The previous week they tied against SMU. They take on San Francisco on Thursday, Oct. 17.
- Marshall – The Herd, at 7-1-2, tied their last match against James Madison on Friday. They will take on UCF on Oct. 13 and Coastal Carolina on Oct. 18.
- North Carolina – The Tar Heels are 7-1-4 and look to break their tie from last week against Notre Dame. They will play against William & Mary on Tuesday the 15th.
- James Madison – James Madison sits at 5-1-5. They will face off against Georgia Southern in a makeup game on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
- Maryland – The Terps (7-1-4) are on a 2-game winning streak, with their next matchup against No. 13 George Mason on Oct. 15.
- San Diego – The Toreros (8-1-2) will face Santa Clara on Oct. 17 in a WCC conference game. The team looks to continue their two-game winning streak.
Now, let us swap to the Top 10 Division I women’s teams:
- Duke – With a record of 11-1, the Blue Devils are on an astounding 11-game winning streak. They face Boston College on Oct. 19.
- North Carolina – The Tar Heels have a 13-2 record, the team lost against Stanford on Sunday. They will face off against Clemson on Oct. 17.
- Wake Forest – The Deacons (9-2-2) are on a two-game winning streak following their game against Florida State, facing SMU on Oct. 19.
- Mississippi State – Hold a record of 11-1. The team is riding an impressive eight-game winning streak, hoping to continue against Missouri on Oct. 13.
- Michigan State – The Spartans are 9-1-5 after a loss against Washington. They face Wisconsin in a Big Ten matchup on Oct. 17.
- Arkansas – The Razorbacks, currently 11-1-1, aim to continue their two-game winning streak on Friday, Oct. 18 against Texas.
- Stanford – The Cardinals are 12-2-1 following their game against North Carolina, and they are set to take on Louisville on Oct. 17.
- Ohio State – Sitting at 10-2-3 overall, the Buckeyes hope to continue their aggression after their win against Purdue. They will face off against USC on Oct. 17.
- Iowa – Sitting at 11-1-3, the Hawkeyes look to turn their streak into a two-game winning streak against Washington at home on Oct. 17.
- Santa Clara – The Broncos are 9-2-2 and on a one-game winning streak, preparing to face Pacific in a WCC match on Oct. 19.
The season is in full effect with teams in their respective conferences giving it their best shot, in hopes they will have a chance come postseason. As we move closer to the College Cup, the matches will gradually get more intense with teams leaving it all on the field. You can expect to see new upsets, streaks, and critical games. In the minds of players and coaches alike is winning. To get to where they want, they must execute in almost every match. Now is the best time to familiarize yourself with NCAA Division I soccer and the race to the College Cup tournament. Hype will continue to rise from here.
