After a 23-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, Oct. 6, the Jets decided to part ways with head coach Robert Saleh, who finished with a 20-36 record throughout his time with the Jets. Jeff Ulbrich, the Jets’ defensive coordinator was named as the interim manager, but here are three targets if the Jets decide to bring in someone new for next season.
Ben Johnson, Detroit Lions Offensive Coordinator
After taking over the offensive coordinator job from Anthony Lynn during the 2022 season, Ben Johnson has developed into one of the best offensive coordinators in the NFL. Since he’s taken over, he’s helped Jared Goff revive his career and helped unlock the Lions’ offense.
What’s intriguing about Johnson is that he doesn’t force players to fit into his system. Instead, he plays to his players’ strengths. If the Jets could hire Ben Johnson, then we could see Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson take a giant leap in the Jets’ offense.
Bobby Slowik, Houston Texans Offensive Coordinator
Bobby Slowik is an up-and-coming offensive head coach. He worked under Kyle Shanahan for six seasons before joining the Texans as offensive coordinator. With Slowik as offensive coordinator, the Texans ranked 12th in total offense in 2023 and sixth in total offense in 2024.
He also developed CJ Stroud into a top-10 quarterback in the National Football League. If Aaron Rodgers retires this season, and the Jets draft a new quarterback, the Jets should hire him as their next head coach.
Klint Kubiak, Offensive Coordinator New Orleans Saints
Klint Kubiak is the son of Gary Kubiak, former head coach of the Jets and Broncos. Klint worked under his father and Kyle Shanahan as a passing game coordinator in 2023. The New Orleans Saints hired him as their offensive coordinator in 2024. During the first two weeks of the NFL season, the Saints put up historic numbers on offense.
In Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers, the Saints offense put up 47 points. The next week against the Dallas Cowboys, the Saints put up 45 points on offense. Even though the Saints are rated 18th in total offense, if the offensive numbers improve throughout the season, the Jets could potentially hire him as a head coach
It’s too early to tell who’s going to get hired by the Jets, but once the season is over, there will be a clearer idea of coaching candidates the Jets will pursue next offseason. Once we get closer to the offseason, there will be a full analysis of all the head coaching candidates.
