On Tuesday, Oct. 29, Rowan CAs hosted a Sip ‘n Paint in the lobby of the 223 West High Street apartment building as part of community bonding. Around 10 people attended, taking part in painting and drinking Shirley Temples.
The lobby of the apartment building was set up to accommodate a small group of people, with two tables decked out in Halloween-themed tables covered in painting supplies. Paint trays, canvases, brushes, and paints were provided, as well as water cups to rinse brushes.
Attendees painted all sorts of things, including Snoopy in a field of pumpkins, a Jack-o-lantern, and a ghost. This event served as the perfect opportunity for residents of the Nexus Apartments (or the Rowan population at large) to get into the Halloween spirit while getting their creative juices flowing.
Events like this Sip ‘n Paint are hosted frequently across campus by Community Assistants like junior and elementary education major Shaniya Bates.
“We just invite people to come over so they can have interactions,” said Bates. “Many residents– they might not feel comfortable with campus. So just a way for people to come out and get to know each other and feel connected here at Rowan campus.”
Sometimes, these gatherings are more poorly attended, and so for Tuesday’s event, Bates said she was most excited about the good amount of people there.
This event proved to be a good way to get connected. People were talking and laughing, music was playing, and there were also goodie bags for people to take on their way out.
Among the paintings was one by senior and psychology major Ella Haulenbeek.
“I painted a beautiful starry sky with purples and pinks and clouds and stars,” said Haulenbeek. “It was really fun to chill out and paint for an hour.”
When asked if she likes the events CAs put on, she said yes.
“Yeah, it’s really fun. I wish more people went to them because it’s really nice to just do things with people you know and the people you live with, and to get to know the people around you,” said Haulenbeek.
It’s true that attendance was low, and could be lower still. Still, CAs will continue to host events such as the Sip ‘n Paint as an option for students to get connected.
To keep up with these events, and get connected with people on campus, all CA events are posted on Proflink, with relevant information including date, location, time, and cost.
