Week 8 brings two more victories to the top two teams in the NFC East. The bottom two teams fall further down the ladder as they attempt to catch up.
Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles blew by the Cincinnati Bengals, who were 3-4 going into the contest, by a score of 37-17. Jalen Hurts had his first big game of the year, throwing for 236 yards and completing 16 of his 20 attempts. His lone passing touchdown went to Devonta Smith on a 45-yard toss. Hurts also added 10 rushes for 37 yards and three rushing touchdowns.
Rookie Cooper DeJean showed the Eagles why he was worthy of the 40th overall pick with crucial open-field tackles. Despite the Eagles’ victory, they remain the only team in the NFL to be scoreless in the first quarter this season.
Washington Commanders: Jayden Daniels and the Commanders faced off against the No. 1 pick of the 2024 draft, Caleb Williams, and the Chicago Bears on Sunday. It would be Daniels who won the day though, as the Commanders took down the Bears by a score of 18-15.
It was a slow start for the Commanders as they couldn’t find the end zone for the first three quarters, resulting in four field goals for kicker Austin Seibert. Despite coming up empty in the end zone for the majority of the game, the Commanders still managed 481 total yards of offense.
It wasn’t until there were two seconds left in the fourth quarter that Daniels showed why he deserved to be the No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft. The ball was snapped from the Commanders’ 48-yard line, however, Daniels launched a Hail Mary attempt from his own 35-yard line to the end zone and connected with Noah Brown for the walk-off win. Tyrique Stevenson, the Bears defensive back tipped the ball into the hands of Brown after taunting the audience before the play.
Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys came off a bye for their Week 8 matchup, and fans hoped they would be well rested and well prepared to play an injury-ridden San Francisco 49ers. This was not the case, however, as they would go on to lose 30-24. Micah Parsons was listed as inactive for a high ankle sprain along with running back Rico Dowdle, who was a late scratch due to an illness.
For the third consecutive game, Dak Prescott threw two interceptions. Running back Ezekiel Elliot averaged 3.4 yards per carry on ten attempts. It wasn’t all negative, however, as star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb had 13 receptions for 146 yards and two touchdowns.
New York Giants: The Giants suffered their third consecutive loss after a 26-18 final out in Pittsburgh on Monday Night Football. Running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. took control of the Giants backfield, out-handling Devin Singletary twenty carries to two. He made the most of these carries too, as Tracy rushed for 145 yards and one touchdown. Daniel Jones completed 24 of 38 passes throwing for 264 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. The receiving room was relatively even for the Giants with Malik Nabers tallying seven receptions, and Darius Slayton capturing 108 receiving yards.
Outlook: Week 9 of the NFL brings an NFC East divisional matchup with the Commanders taking on the Giants. The Commanders remain in the top spot of the NFC currently with the Eagles right on their tail.
