Crowded around the owl statue at 3:00 p.m. on the Tuesday before finals week was a hoard of Rowan students wildly cheering for a handful of boys who vaguely resembled Tom Holland.
Ever since the now cultural phenomenon of the Timothee Chalamet look-alike contest in October of this year, places around the country are holding their own celebrity look-alike competitions, looking for doppelgangers of Miles Teller and Jeremy Allen White. Thanks to the duo who runs Rowan’s Barstool account on Instagram, Rowan held their very own look-alike contest.
For Alex Fuhrmeister, who co-runs the account @barstool_rowan, it was a no-brainer making Tom Holland the face of this event.
“I cannot believe that so many people came. Honestly, we were so scared to even do it. We were like, what if we should just cancel because we were so scared no one was going to show up,” Fuhrmeister said.
Not only did people show up for the event, they showed up ready to cheer and roar for the person they thought most closely resembled the British actor. After the judges eliminated the first round of look-alikes, Fuhrmeister had the crowd cheer for who they thought was the best fit. The winner was overwhelmingly Kevin Myers, a Rowan alum who, fittingly, during his time at the university was known as Rowan’s Spider-Man. Myers would frequently be caught on campus in the full getup, doing low-grade stunts and putting them on his Instagram.
While Myers did show up to the competition in a full Spider-Man suit, mask included, members of the crowd were completely won over when he revealed his face.
“When he pulled up I was kind of mad because I was like, he has a mask on so we don’t even know what he looks like. When he took it off I was like, yo this guy looks like him. He showed up fashionably late, he was dressed for the event, and he looks like him,” said Rowan sophomore Olivia Alexander.
After the winner was announced, students quickly formed a line to get a picture with Myers, who was awarded a T-shirt with Tom Holland on it that read, “I look kind of like Tom Holland.” His prize also included a crisp $20 bill.
The excitement was palpable coming from students, who shouted during the competition, “Zendaya look-alike competition next!”
“I think that a lot of the look-alike contests are for guys. I think they need to do something for girls, like a Sabrina Carpenter contest,” Alexander said.
“Sign me up,” said Chris Woodson, Alexander’s friend who was waiting to get a photo with Myers.
“I was thinking Penn Badgley,” Woodson said.
“Oh my god, I would be there so fast,” Alexander said in response.
As for the winner himself, he doesn’t really think he looks like Tom Holland.
“In my opinion, they look more like Tom Holland than I do. I just don’t see it myself,” Myers said.
Myers made his comeback to Rowan just for the event and said the Rowan Spider-Man account may make a comeback too.
“Maybe I’ll do a Rowan Spider-Man part two,” said Myers.
