Jimmy Butler was having a season of drama. It all started back during the offseason, when Butler made a comment about the Boston Celtics, who beat the Miami Heat in just five games during the NBA Playoffs and went on the win the NBA Finals.
Butler claimed, “If I was playing, Boston would be at home. New York [Knicks] damn sure would be at home. [Knicks head coach Tom] Thibs, you want me. I don’t want to beat you, but I love you,” This quote got the whole NBA media landscape talking about it and got under the skin of Heat President Pat Riley.
Riley responded with a quote of his own, saying, “For him to say that, I thought, ‘Is that Jimmy trolling? Or is that Jimmy being serious?’ If you’re not on the court playing against Boston or on the court playing against the New York Knicks, you should keep your mouth shut.”
Ever since then, there’s been bad blood between the two. Although Butler played at the beginning of the season, the media thought he wasn’t happy. And they were right, as the Heat suspended Butler for missing practices and some team flights. This not only signified that the relationship was over, but Miami would have to trade the NBA star.
As the NBA trade deadline was approaching, Butler’s name was thrown around as someone to watch for teams like the Phoenix Suns or Golden State Warriors. According to multiple reports, Butler’s preferred destination was Phoenix, but no matter what, he wanted out of Miami.
His last game with the Heat came on Jan. 21, and on Feb. 5, Butler’s request to get out of Miami was granted, as he was sent to Golden State to pair up with superstar Stephen Curry. It’ll be interesting to monitor how the two mesh together as the season progresses, but so far, Butler’s scored over 20 points in both of the two games he’s played with the team.
If this pairing goes well, we could see the Warriors make a push for a deep postseason run. While the top of the Western Conference is controlled by the Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State is only 2.5 games out of the six-seed and just six games back of the four-seed. If the new duo can click early, we could see Golden State go on a run and make some noise in the playoffs.
