Rowan University offers a plethora of sports clubs from the Bowling Club to the Golf Club. However, one of the most unique clubs is the Rowan Badminton Club.
The Badminton Club meets on Tuesdays and Fridays. The club is not a competitive team and is welcoming to all levels.
Medha Dabral, a junior majoring in biological sciences with a minor in chemistry, is the president of the club.
“ I feel that Rowan’s Badminton Club is a sports club,” said Dabral. “That means a lot to the university just like any other sports club. I think what the club brings to the table is that it allows any member from any background, any skill level to be able to participate in this club. We’re welcoming to any type of student here, whether freshman, senior, you know, any type of major, beginner or pro, to join our club.”
Dan Baker, who is a senior majoring in computing and informatics is the vice president of the club. Baker explained how the club is different from the other clubs at Rowan University from the financial perspective.
“ I think another thing that makes the club so important to the campus is the fact that to this point, we have remained completely free to join, which is very different from, I would guess, the majority of sports clubs on campus,” said Baker.
Dylan Morris who is a junior majoring in mechanical engineering technology is the secretary of the club. He finds the best part of the club to be the exercise gained from the meetings.
“ It’s the physical activity,” said Morris. “You know, there’s so many different ways you can play. You can play where you’re running around the whole time, or where you’re just standing in one spot, hitting it back and forth. And that, just the diversity of physical activity is what draws me to the club, personally.”
A highlight of the club was when they won the Rec Club of the Year award last year.
“ We thought we might win the comeback of the year or most improved,” said Baker. “We thought we were going to win that. And then I think it was the Bowling Club that won it last year. And we were like, ‘Oh, well better luck next time.’ And we won rec club of the year.”
Joining clubs at Rowan like the Rowan Badminton Club can help boost student’s confidence and increase their involvement on campus.
“I feel like this club has definitely helped me increase my confidence level to a point because when I first joined this club, I was a freshman,” said Dabral. “Just like any other freshman, I was scared of how big the campus was. And it’s different clubs and different things to do. And you’re kind of just almost in a sense, ‘What do I do? Where do I go?’ But by joining a club at the time, I’ve been active.”
