Rowan University women’s lacrosse (2-0) pummeled Drew University on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at Rowan Soccer & Lacrosse Complex in Glassboro, NJ.
Senior midfielder Molly Green contributed five goals and three assists and tallied 10 draw controls to become Rowan’s all-time leader in draw controls. She currently has 297 in her career, breaking the record by All-American Taylor Gretz (2015-19) of 292. Green credits her fellow teammate, graduate student, Hannah Lombardo for the record.
“ It feels really good, but I couldn’t have done it without Hannah controlling the draw,” said Green. “Hannah’s a beast. She can get it to me no matter what.”
Another major factor in the victory was the performance of the junior attack, Elaina Corson. Corson led the scoring for the Profs with eight and also had two assists finishing with 10 points. She was able to reach her career-high and was just one goal away from breaking the Rowan record for goals in a game (9), held by Becca Wood (2013) and Allie Dickey (2011).
I think, you know, we just wanted to make a statement from the start, so that’s what I went out there and did,” said Corson. “I think just overall, even though like I scored a lot, I think it was just an overall team performance and a lot of people gave me assists.”
The Profs had 37 shots compared to the 11 from Drew University and scored nine goals in the first quarter. Head coach, Lindsay Delaney was extremely happy with the dominant performance on Wednesday.
“ Overall, I think it was complete dominance,” said Delaney. “I think they were in control. They made great decisions with the ball, but also just in their communication and their ride was great. The amount of calls and turnovers they received was great… I think they were in complete control from the start.”
Rowan held a 10-0 lead before Drew University scored at 10:33 of the second quarter. The Profs scored eight goals in the second half to close out the game, one goal shy of the school record for goals in a game.
Rowan will be back in action on Saturday when they face No. 17 ranked Stevens at 1:00 p.m. Last season, the Profs lost a close one to the Ducks. Delaney is focused on one thing in the game: winning.
“ We came a goal short against them last year with an inexperienced team,” said Delaney. “We should be winning this year. They know it. I think they feel that they should be winning. And I think that’s all we’re thinking about is just winning.”
