Steven Maiers and No. 18 Rowan baseball’s (19-8) relievers threw a combined shutout during their Tuesday, April 15, matchup with Arcadia (21-10), as the Profs rebounded from a rough conference loss the day prior with a 9-0 win over the Knights.
The Profs gave up 20 runs to New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent Rutgers-Camden on April 14, the most they’ve allowed all season. Rowan also committed a season-high seven errors, their most in a game since 2017.
Head coach Mike Dickson gave his kudos to his starting ace and the rest of the Profs for getting the team back on track.
“Maiers did a fantastic job today. We needed to rebound, and we obviously didn’t play well yesterday since we had a bunch of errors and didn’t pitch real well,” Dickson said. “So we need to be able to respond with a good outing and start on the mound.”
Christian Rice and Mark Grubb maintained the shutout in the final two innings as Maiers went seven innings scoreless following a disappointing last start for the Profs’ ace. He gave up seven earned runs in just over four innings in game 2 of a NJAC doubleheader versus Montclair State.
“It feels really good. I definitely wanted to turn things around after my last outing,” Maiers said. “Everything felt good today, and it’s good to get back on track at home.”
The Profs’ offense also got back into rhythm, scoring six of their nine runs in the first two innings. Tyler Cannon drove in Mason Dorsey and Joey Bogart with a 2-RBI double in the bottom of the second inning, followed in suit by a single from Phil Sedalis to score Cannon and Karson Harcourt. Rowan would go on to score five runs that inning.
Arcadia began to threaten the end of the shutout in the top of the fifth inning, as Maiers found himself facing Knights outfielder Kevin Wheeler with runners on first and second and two outs. Wheeler hit a single to Jason Morgan in left field as the runner on second, Max Oswald, rounded third. Morgan threw the ball to Harcourt to get Oswald out at home, cementing the shutout for the Profs.
“I never want to have my hopes too high, but I was pretty confident that I got him [Oswald],” Morgan said.
Maiers was happy to have the defensive support from Morgan and his teammates to hold Arcadia to zero runs.
“I was excited and fired up,” Maiers said. “They played great for me in the field, and I needed it.”
The Profs have a day off on Wednesday before their NJAC play continues on Thursday with the TCNJ Lions. Following a much-needed out-of-conference win, the Profs will look to carry the positive momentum from their win into conference play, where they currently sit with a .500 record (4-4).
Coming off a bad loss to Rutgers-Camden, Morgan says shutting out a strong team like Arcadia the very next day was the perfect remedy.
“We played a really good team today and shut them down. We came out from the jump scoring runs and playing our game,” Morgan said. “So it feels nice to get a win after kind of an embarrassing loss yesterday.”
