This past week, a crowd of “rowdy” teenagers made their way onto campus, taking up a majority of Rowan Boulevard both Thursday and Friday night, as first reported by ABC News.
Authorities say that the juveniles in question ranged from 13 to 17 years old, and while some were local to Glassboro, the majority of the “flash mob” came from towns outside of Gloucester County such as Philadelphia, Camden, Bridgeton, Newark, Jersey City, and several other towns.
“It’s this time of year where there’s a ton of activity throughout the community, a lot of activity around campus. and a lot of younger people from outside tend to come here,” said Joe Cardona, the Vice President of University Relations at Rowan.
A similar situation occurred at Temple University a week prior to Rowan’s incident, though Temple saw numerous assaults and robberies take place, with Temple’s Police Department still looking for those responsible.
Police presence on Rowan’s campus began at around 11:00 p.m., and police remained in the area until around 3:00 a.m. The “flash mob” took several hours to fully disperse from Rowan Boulevard, as Rowan and Glassboro Police worked alongside officers from other departments in Gloucester County to get the job done.
According to Rowan’s Police Department, nobody was injured during the “flash mob,” nor was there any significant property damage done to anything on Rowan Boulevard.
“The Rowan Police Department will continue working cooperatively with the Glassboro Police Department, as well as other local agencies, to maintain a safe environment both on and off campus. We will continue to bring in additional Rowan Police and Security to augment our staffing during typically busy times such as weekends and evenings. As always, we encourage the Rowan Community to report suspicious activity to our department immediately,” said Rachel Baum, the Interim Chief of Police for the Rowan Police Department.
