The 17-17 tie that concluded Rowan football’s home opener on Sept. 6 due to two weather delays has been confirmed, according to Rowan Athletics. All statistics from the game will be upheld and recorded by the NCAA.
Last weekend, the Profs’ matchup against Case Western Reserve University at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium experienced four hours’ worth of delays. The game was eventually suspended following a mutual agreement between multiple parties, despite Rowan leading 17-14 with 2:07 seconds left in the third quarter.
All game statistics were pending the NCAA rulebook following the conclusion of the contest, but were confirmed earlier this week, according to Rowan Athletics.
Head coach Pat Ruley says he has come to terms with the outcome.
“I guess I’m as satisfied as I could be,” Ruley said. “I thought we were in a good position to win that game. It was unfortunate that the game got called, but I think that the tie ends up being better for us than a no-contest.”
Here’s a recap of last Saturday’s game now that statistics are official:
Nunes Bukula IV got the Profs on the board quickly, facing the Case Western Reserve Spartans on Saturday. Quarterback Nate Maiers found Bukula IV for a 75-yard touchdown on the opening drive, putting the Profs up 49 seconds into the first quarter.
“It was super electric,” Bukula IV said. “We started off really, really well.”
The Spartans immediately responded, with quarterback Aaron Filips rushing up the middle to even out the score. With four seconds to go in the first quarter, Filips found receiver Andy Kavcic for a 66-yard touchdown to take the one-score lead.
Rowan’s offense went quiet after Bukula’s touchdown. The Spartans’ defense tightened up and Profs to three unsuccessful drives to close out the first half. The light was dwindling for the Profs, who desperately needed a spark to come back to life. Defensive back Ameer Mason provided that in the third quarter.
Filips fumbled the ball on the Profs one yard line and Mason ran it back 99-yards to the house. The play got the crowd on their feet and brought Rowan’s offense back to life.
“We felt like we had all the momentum,” Ruley said. “And I thought we were in a good position to win the game.”
After an unsuccessful drive following a blocked Spartans punt, Profs kicker Greg Casimier nailed a 31-yard field goal to give his team a 17-14 lead.
Rowan’s week two matchup will be against Moravian University at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium this Saturday, Sept. 13. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
