In exchange for old t-shirts, sweatshirts, and headgear from other colleges, universities, or high schools, students can receive a brand new, free Rowan University t-shirt. All students have to do is bring their old items to the information desk at the Chamberlain Student Center. This program will run during the fall semester.
Dr. Joseph Lizza, director of the Student Center and lead of the t-shirt swap started this program with one goal in mind: to get more students wearing Rowan Prof’s colors.
“We really need to get more people wearing Rowan brown and gold, to build that community and it’s great because it’s also marketing for the university,” said Lizza.
When trading in articles of clothing, not only are students getting a piece of Rowan merchandise, they are benefiting two local businesses: Goodwill of Glassboro and The Salvation Army store in Turnersville.
“It’s pretty important, a lot of people are unfortunate, every once in a while if you are willing to give, you’re not bad,” said Miekel House, Rowan University student.
Having something to give to someone who is from another state or even another country is something that Lizza wants to achieve with this program.
“This just allows them a lower-cost way of getting something,” said Lizza.
Dr. Lizza remembers a time when someone traded in a t-shirt for a Rowan shirt to wear at a home football game.
“We’ve had students, I remember that they came as a group because they were planning to go to a home football game,” said Dr. Lizza.
The t-shirt swap program will allow students to feel connected and to easily access Rowan apparel.
“We want to make wearing Rowan gear accessible to all students,” said Dr. Lizza. “We think that’s important…this is an easy way to do it. You know, we want you to feel pride in both the academics of the campus plus the athletics. We just think it’s great that when people see someone wearing a Rowan shirt, I know I wear Rowan shirts a lot on the weekends. You’re in a community and you walk around and someone will yell out, ‘Oh yeah, I went there.’”
