Rowan’s men soccer starts the 2021 season ranked 15th and that’s strongly thanks to James Weinberg and his six saves so far this season.
The last time Rowan’s men soccer team took the field was in 2019 when they lost in the Sweet Sixteen of the Division 3 NCAA Championship to Amherst College. There being no season last year meant another year of waiting to see if this team can build upon the success of 2019 and be championship contenders again.
The Profs started the 2021 season by defeating SUNY New Paltz 1-0 and Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham 2-1 to win the Drew Fall Classic behind strong performances in goalkeeping by James Weinberg, and on offense by Jay Vandermark. It’s a solid start for a team that has much larger aspirations than the Drew Fall Classic.
With a lot of the same players on the team from 2019, they have the advantage of knowing what it takes to play meaningful soccer in November while showing the new guys the way.
“I think we’re in a really good position, to not only live up to those expectations but also exceed them,” Head Coach Scott Baker said. “And I think the guys that were around in 2019 know we can do better and they’re focused on that.”
The Profs have the talent this year to contend but the major key to success for them this year is to not beat themselves up and to have better discipline in games.
“We needed to be disciplined and focused to win those big games in the national tournament,” Baker said. “These are the two things that prevented us from going further in 2019.”
Tonight, the men’s soccer team traveled to York Pennsylvania to take on York College to continue to build on the success of last weekend, defeating the Cardinals 2-1.
