The Rowan club rugby team was handed their first loss of the season as they dropped their match against Salisbury University 12-10.
Head Coach Tim Smith described the loss as “a game we beat ourselves in.”
Salisbury held the Profs to only five points in the first half, their lowest all season along, and only allowed them to score five more in the second half.
Johnny Mitchell, a senior, and Joseph Smith, a junior, both had one try while Hunter Musson, a senior, missed his only conversion attempt.
“It was too windy, the ball was going all over the place,” Coach Smith said. “By our second score, we didn’t even attempt a conversion.”
After the game, Musson commented on what he felt happened last weekend.
“I think we conceded pretty early on and the effort just wasn’t there,” Musson said. “We thought we were better than them and that wasn’t the right mindset to have.”
Coach Smith, on the other hand, sees a lot of promise in his team especially when he talked to him in the huddle during practice.
“If we played these guys three weeks ago we would have beat them by 50 and I honestly believe that,” Coach Smith said. “But we are tired and a lot of guys are dealing with injuries so this is a key bye week we are heading into.”
Rowan’s record drops to 4-1 and finds itself tied with three other teams in the Mid-Athletic Rugby Conference (MARC).
Rowan’s bye-week comes this week and as the team, they plan to head to Washington DC to watch the USA vs. New Zealand Rugby Match on Saturday, Oct. 23. After their bye-week, they face another home match against James Madison University on Oct. 30 at 1 p.m.
