Rowan University students kicked off Halloween weekend with a mix of music, costumes, and community spirit. On Oct. 24, Rowan’s Touring and Concert Promotion class, RMG Touring, hosted Music vs Monsters at Prof’s Place on the bottom floor of the Student Center. The members transformed the space into a vibrant concert scene filled with energy, music, and excitement.
Students came dressed in costumes ranging from funny to scary, ready to jam out to some bands’ amazing music. There were five performances highlighted throughout the night. The audience got to enjoy music from artists like Linarah, Passion by Proxy, Calling From Pluto, Goofy At Night, and Zephyr. A costume contest as well as raffles were hosted to give attendees a chance to win some prizes and get in the Halloween spirit.
The opening performance of the night was from Carolina Silva, also known by her stage name Linarah, a singer-songwriter from South America and a senior at Rowan. She performed a beautiful song written in Spanish called “Tres Pasos.”
“I was in Ecuador back in the summer with this friend, and we made this song in one day,” said Linarah.
Her soft vocals and emotional delivery set the tone for the night. Linarah gave a passionate performance, overcome with emotion about her connection to her music and faith. She was supported by her loved ones, who were watching proudly from the audience.
“I’m just gonna give a special shout-out to my dear friends. I love them so much, and I’m so happy they’re here,” said Linarah.
Passion by Proxy is an indie rock band based in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. This was their first time performing in New Jersey.
Their upbeat sound and captivating stage presence quickly encouraged the audience to move along with them. A mini mosh pit even formed near the front of the stage with students jumping and dancing along as the band performed.
“I hope they had a good time. I saw everyone dancing and that made me really happy,” said Jasmine Thek, bass player of Passion by Proxy.
Another indie rock band, Calling From Pluto, also took the stage in Prof’s Place. They’ve only been together since the Spring of this year, making their stage debut at Hollybash.
Despite being a newer group, they brought confidence and talent to the stage. The audience danced along to their performances as they performed original songs as well as covers. They enjoyed the band so much that the band performed an encore for the crowd.
“My favorite performance so far would probably have to be Calling From Pluto,” said Mack Rielly, a senior marketing major.
The atmosphere at the event was relaxed and welcoming. Music filled the space, and people from all walks of life were able to enjoy it together. The energy seemed to be what made the event stand out.
“I believe that it brings in a lot of different demographics, rather than having a niche to it,” said Rielly. ”It’s really cool to see so many different backgrounds here. I think it’s very welcoming,”
The combination of live music, student energy, and Halloween spirit made Music vs Monsters more than just another campus event. It was a reminder of the sense of community that music brings to Rowan’s campus, even if it’s just for one unforgettable night.
