I’m sure everyone can remember checking their phone notifications on some random day in the NBA’s offseason and then seeing a huge breaking news tweet from one of if not, the top reporters in the NBA.
And I’m sure everyone can remember their favorite or least favorite “Woj Bomb.”
For those who aren’t aware, a “Woj bomb” was essentially huge news of a trade, player signing, or even the complete shutdown of an NBA season. It’s become widely known on the NBA side of X because of the millions of followers he garnered over time.
He’s been the first to report huge signings and trades such as the big names of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George heading to the Clippers in a big 2019 free agency. Or Lebron going to the Lakers back in 2018. One of my favorites is the announcement of who the Sixers selected with their 21st overall pick back in the 2021 NBA draft, Tyrese Maxey, especially after seeing all the comments about how it was the “wrong pick.”
However, after years in the sports media, Adrian Wojnarowski has decided to retire in delivering breaking news to millions of NBA fans.
Woj is now going to a completely different side of the basketball world, and becoming a GM of the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team, a mid-major school in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
His relationship with the school is publicly known, as recently he pledged $50,000 to the 2024 school’s NIL collective.
This to many reporters and fans came as a huge surprise considering back in 2022 Woj signed a deal with ESPN that was around the $7.5 million ballpark for five years. So, it’s not crazy for many to question why he’s walking away from $20 million.
So, why retire now?
Only Woj can really answer that question, but it most likely comes from the fatigue over the tons of years he’s been doing this. Constantly having to be on your phone 24/7 waiting or anticipating for texts on information.
However it’s also not crazy to say how much of a big impact Woj left on not just NBA media, but sports media as a whole. Woj was consistently not only the first to deliver NBA news, but it was accurate.
Woj first began his career in New Jersey, writing for the Bergen Record, and was an award-winning columnist.
A question that has arisen from Wojs’ retirement is the question of “who’s going to be next?”. Many have pointed to the Athletic’s Shams Charania, who is much like Woj.
In fact for quite a few years now, fans of the NBA would always see who was first to break any sort of big news in the league, almost as if it was a race.
However, Shams’ contract with the Athletic is almost up, meaning that there will certainly be a bidding war for him.
Going full circle, his last final big announcement, or a “Woj bomb”, was one of himself, making a grand exit in the NBA media scene.
