Sisterhood can be one of the most memorable relationships gained from the sorority chosen by students. The most challenging part for college students deciding to rush is choosing which sorority fits their lifestyle and values best. Meet the Sisters, hosted by the National Panhellenic Conference, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and Greek Cultural Organizations Council sororities, located at the Chamberlain Student Center assist students in making this difficult decision-making process. All sororities hosted tables surrounded by sisters as well as helpful information about the sorority itself, values, and giveaways for those interested.
The event lit up with excitement and was full of conversation on this chilly, Monday evening. Sisters looking for new recruitments and students looking to find sisters had most people in the room talking about what the different organizations valued.
From informational presentations to one-on-one conversations at the Greek Life tables to fun facts and dances, all and any questions had the opportunity to be answered by Greek Life representatives.
Alpha Kappa Alpha performed a “stroll” at the end of their presentation to highlight the culture behind their Greek organization.
“It’s called a stroll..that is something traditionally that Black sororities continue to do so it’s not like something that we do pretty frequently. I would say whenever we have a bit like this, it’s a week of practice,” said Skye Robinson, an art education major and president of Alpha Kappa Alpha.
It was evident that all Greek organizations at this event had one clear goal in mind: to support their sisters through it all.
“I feel like throughout recruitment, especially when I went through it right when I stepped into all of our rooms, I knew that this was a place to be,” said Olivia Romano, vice president of member development, elementary education major, and sister of Alpha Sigma Tau.
“I also support sisters academically, and I make sure that they’re on track, and if they need any help, I’m there for them, and it just really is rewarding knowing that I’m helping sisters every single day,” said Romano.
Students of all majors, academic years, and backgrounds discovered their true, authentic selves at this event to align their self-values with the different sorority values.
“We all love helping out, helping as many people as we can, volunteering, and I think our values are just all around sisterhood and being closest with each other and just making sure everyone feels comfortable with each other,” said Gabriella Hart, member of Alpha Sigma Tau sorority.
There are some requirements that students must meet in order to join Rowan University’s sisterhood; students must obtain at least a cumulative GPA of 2.5, have a minimum of 12 credits and basic skills classes completed, must be a sophomore in addition to submitting the “New Member Registration Form” for sorority life.
“This is all about you and to see where you feel most comfortable. So, just stay confident and be yourself,” said Romano.
Some students showed up in the moral support of their friends but still took away a valuable lesson.
“Everybody kind of seems very friendly like all of the sisters seem nice and friendly,” said Caroline Stanley, a freshman and inclusive education major.
From the beginning to the end of the night, the Chamberlain Student Center Ballroom was full of positivity and excitement, with decorations that took plenty of preparation by all of the Greek Life organizations.
“Don’t be nervous because everyone’s really friendly and takes the time to get to know you because they want you to have fun,” said Stanley.
