Rowan men’s outdoor track and field put together top times over the weekend at the Georgia Tech Invitational at George C. Griffin in Atlanta, GA, and the Paul Donohue Invitational hosted by Widener University in Chester, PA, on April 18 & 19.
While there was no team scoring at the meets, the Profs achieved multiple top times in Division III. Head coach Dustin Dimit expressed how having warm weather helped both teams succeed over the weekend.
“ Both meets, being in the eighties, helps in our sport for most of the events,” said Dimit. “Distance runners don’t like it that warm, but everybody else does, and we had good weather for the 5K the night before for that as well at Widener.”
The Profs were led by New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Men’s Track and Field Track Athlete of the Week, freshman Jamir Brown. The Riverside native placed second (13.79) in the 110-meter hurdles at the Georgia Tech Invitational. Brown stated that winning this award shows that he is improving.
“ I’m happy now,” said Brown. “It is steps to where my journey’s going, and that’s just showing like I’m progressing.”
Brown was not the only one who was successful over the weekend in the 110-meter hurdles, as junior Michael Lawrence claimed first place (14.84) at the Paul Donahue Invitational. Lawrence was motivated by missing nationals last year.
“ Trying to be better every day,” said Lawrence. “I missed nationals by a fifth of a second, so that’s just in my mind every day. I made it my new lockscreen on my phone. So every day I wake up with that chip on my shoulder, just trying to make it better.”
Something that Lawrence is focused on improving going forward is getting a top ten ranking and trying to make a name for himself.
“ Hoping that I get placed top 10 in the nation going into nationals and that I run something fast enough where I’m in the national final,” said Lawrence. “We’ve got all Americans and national champions, and I’m trying to solidify my name amongst them, and that’s my goal.”
The Profs return to action this weekend at The Penn Relays from April 24-26 at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, PA, and the Lions Invitational hosted by The College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ on April 25 and 26. Dimit is excited to see his relay team perform over the weekend.
“ We want to just see continued growth from the relays,” said Dimit.
