Twin sisters Olivia and Julianna Giordano are not only identical to one another, but have simultaneously been connected to the sport of soccer since they were four years old.
“We’ve always played outside back and forward together, so it has always been a dynamic between the two of us,” Olivia Giordano said. “It has always been twin power with us.”
In the attacking third, Olivia Giordano has consistently had a knack for the netting. She’s on the cusp of reaching double-digit goals for the fourth consecutive season as the reigning New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Offensive Player of the Year.
While Olivia Giordano scores a majority of the goals, Julianna Giordano brings the energy, ensuring the opposition cannot break through an impenetrable Rowan back line. The Profs’ defense has only allowed an NJAC-best three goals thus far. Despite playing different roles, the twin sisters correlate every minute of every match.
“When we’re on the field, I know exactly what run she’s going to make and what runs I should make,” Julianna Giordano said. “We literally just know each other’s every single move.”
Now playing in their senior seasons, the evidence exists to say Olivia and Julianna Giordano have set the standard for No. 11-ranked Rowan women’s soccer as a powerhouse in NCAA Division III.
“Every day, no matter what we’re doing, they just come and work,” head coach Scott Leacott said. “There is no other button with them … that’s what I’m going to miss the most.”
Over the years, Olivia and Julianna Giordano have seen Leacott as more than just a coach, but as someone they can turn to on and off the soccer pitch.
“He’s one of the coaches who is very personable to us,” Olivia Giordano said. “He actually cares about us as people rather than just his players; it’s kind of like having another Dad to me.”
The relationship between coach Leacott and the Giordano’s has been second to none, resulting in the team securing three straight tickets to the NCAA tournament since their arrival to Glassboro in the fall of 2022.
“If I told them to dissect the brick wall right there, they would try their hardest to run through it and find a way to knock it down,” Leacott said. “That’s just the desire they’ve had all through life.”
In recollection, Olivia and Julianna Giordano emphasized the significance of Rowan women’s soccer’s last NJAC championship, capturing the title in their freshman years. Both are making it their mission to return the Profs to glory before season’s end.
“When we last won it, I didn’t play in that game,” Julianna Giordano said. “I want to go into that game and feel that adrenaline [because] that feeling was unforgettable.”
Recognizing that the conclusion of their Rowan careers is near, Olivia and Julianna Giordano are searching for plans after college. Of the countless possibilities, it’s safe to say the twin sisters will always have soccer in their DNA.
“I feel like I can’t drop soccer just like that,” Julianna Giordano said. “It has been a part of my life since I was four years old, [playing] every single weekend, practicing multiple times a week, it’s not something I ever want to forget.”
As Giordano’s aim to make it further in the NCAA tournament this season, there is one characteristic Rowan women’s soccer has possessed for years that offers an advantage toward accomplishing this ultimate goal.
“I feel like we’ve always become a family with one another,” Olivia Giordano said. “We feel close and comfortable with each other, so that’s very special to me.”
