Rowan University is fairly large, offering many spaces for students to go and spend their time however they want. Even so, those same spaces are either neglected or almost forgotten by the entire school body.
As most of us can say, myself included, college-level school work is time-consuming. Three of the many things that I believe most students think about are when classes finish for the day, how much homework is left, and how much time until the next exam comes around. This leads to most students staying inside focusing on their school work, but that’s only what’s on the surface. That doesn’t account for students who have jobs or other responsibilities outside of the college atmosphere that add to the time being placed elsewhere.
All of this can culminate in a stressful and draining college experience, especially with the constant reminders of deadlines banging in the back of your head. With all of that going on, does anyone spend time outside regularly? Regardless of whether you dorm or commute, there are plenty of outdoor spaces that are easily accessible for all students.
But why does it matter? Why should we care?
According to a study from Cornell University, from ages 15 to 30, 10 to 50 minutes in natural spaces improves mood, focus, and physiological markers like blood pressure and heart rate.
Only 10 to 15 minutes outdoors is enough to recuperate and take away the stress from any situation that comes your way. Then, why don’t students take advantage of that? It’s right outside your classroom window, and it’s there waiting for you.
Aside from the changing weather, some students don’t know the options they have when it comes to being outside. College calls for all of us to manage our time and stay close to our next class, but there could be a space right near you.
Aside from the obvious spaces like in front of Robinson Hall, the Student Center, and Business Hall, there are less notable environments, too. One of those spaces is the dirt trail behind Wilson Hall and across from Business Hall, over the small wooden bridge.
The dirt trail is a wooded area that has benches surrounded by trees overlooking a small pond. The place is serene, allowing a break from the same buildings and industrial look of Rowan. Connected to the trail is a seating area behind Engineering Hall. That area of the pond has a fountain that geysers into the air, along with the pond being a good fishing spot. A few years ago, I witnessed someone reel in a catch or two and release them back into the water.
Another spot that allows for a good getaway for students is right in front of Bunce Hall at Bunce Green, where you probably went for Accepted Students Day. It’s a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of crowded spaces. It’s easily accessible and even a great picnic spot if you wanna have a private space for yourself or with others.
This is your moment to take advantage of your time here on campus. Get out there, relax with a deep breath, and enjoy your surroundings in nature with these rarely visited spots.
