After nearly two months of bad baseball, disappointment, and overreactions, the Philadelphia Phillies have seemed to get back on track. After entering the All-Star Break with the best record in baseball, the Phillies came out and dropped five straight series.
Fortunately for Philly, the Mets and Braves kept on losing as well so the division lead didn’t take too much of a hit, hovering between five to seven games the entire time.
It wasn’t until the end of August that the early season vibes returned, when the Phillies went on the road and took two of three from the Royals and returned home and won the series against the Astros.
After that, they took three of four from the Braves in a pivotal divisional matchup, one of which came via a Nick Castellanos walk off, and have been playing good baseball ever since. They swept the Blue Jays in a two-game series, and then split the four game series against the Marlins down in Miami.
The recent resurgence has put the Phillies back on top of the baseball world, and more particularly, the National League. It’s a three team race for the top seed in the N.L. between the Dodgers, Brewers, and Phillies.
With the top two teams receiving a first-round bye, the Phillies can’t afford to finish as the third best team, given the home field advantage that we’ve seen them have throughout the past two years.
There’s roughly 15 games left in the season, but the Phillies currently hold a one game lead over the Dodgers for the best record in MLB, and hold a three and a half game lead over the Brewers. It’s going to be an interesting finish, but it seems that the worst is behind the team now and the team, and vibes, may be back to playing the same brand of baseball they did earlier in the season.
