The Rowan women’s soccer team won their fourth game in a row this past Saturday. This was a theme for all of Rowan athletics last weekend, as they completed a perfect 6-0 Saturday, including a second-place finish for the women’s cross country team.
In their sixth-straight away game, the Profs began New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) against New Jersey City University. In a matchup that saw Rowan out-shoot the Gothic Knights 15-3 in the first half, they were unable to find the back of the net, ultimately falling behind 1-0 at the break. Twenty-one more shots from the brown and gold served them well, scoring three unanswered goals and winning the matchup 3-1. Senior forward and captain Melissa Kelly began the scoring at the 50-minute mark for Rowan, with sophomore midfielder Darah Wagner walking away with the last two.
“It was right after the second half…we were down 1-0, so just coming onto the field we were all super motivated,” Kelly said. “We needed to put it in the net right away.”
The matchup had been a relentless back-and-forth battle on the field for the Profs, but with the encouragement from head coach Scott Leacott and Kelly, the girls mustered up the strength to shut down their challenger.
“I kind of just try to keep everyone motivated and positive,” Kelly said. “Reminding everyone what we need to do, why we’re here to play, and what the ultimate end goals are…if anyone is upset, just picking their heads up and reminding them to work as a team and keep doing what we’ve done in practice so that we can continue to be successful.”
Rowan continued their road trip extravaganza by paying a trip to Arcadia University yesterday afternoon. It was a completely different scenario compared to Saturday’s matchup, as the brown and gold only had nine total shot attempts, 11 less than their season average of 20 per-game. Luckily, one of those attempts found the back of the net courtesy of senior forward and captain Shannon Reardigan within the first 12 minutes.
The win extended the already-thriving winning streak to five.
“I think we’re playing great soccer right now,” Leacott said. “Everything’s clicking… I think [everyone] – from goalkeeper, to defensive lead, to the midfielders and forwards – are making great runs. We’re doing an excellent job in every facade of the game but the finishing part.”
The Profs finally head home for their first matchup in Glassboro on Saturday night for a NJAC duel against William Paterson University.
