Rowan University’s Office of Volunteerism, Community Engagement and Commuter Services provided aid to the Cathedral Kitchen on Oct. 1. With over 200 people in attendance, the volunteers had their hands full running food from the kitchen to the tables.
Ebony Hubbard, a senior music industry major and undergraduate coordinator for the event said that this event was one of her favorites.
“We are able to serve and interact with people,” Hubbard said. “It’s fun for us to go.”
She and five other volunteers from Rowan University went to Cathedral Kitchen in a university marked van.
The Office of Volunteerism, Community Engagement and Commuter Services stressed the importance of volunteering, and its openness to the Rowan community.
“We want to get our volunteers interested [to] volunteer because it’s important!” Hubbard said.
Naveen Kahn, special education graduate student and graduate coordinator, reflected this sentiment. Kahn has been working at the office for about a year now. She spoke on the power an individual could have.
“We’ve had a pretty good turnout,” Kahn said. “We’re trying to give back and do our part, and I hope this brings awareness to students that we’ve grown.”
Nicholas Vaccaro, sophomore biology major and volunteer, went to Cathedral Kitchen to get a new volunteering experience.
Vaccaro previously volunteered at Juniper Village aiding the elderly before he gravitated to this trip because he “tries to keep busy.”
“I want to get involved before the point of stretching myself out too thin,” Vaccaro said.
Vaccaro wished to address the Rowan Community directly.
“Don’t underestimate the opportunity of volunteering. It’s easy,” Vaccaro said.
