It was a tough loss for Rowan football on Saturday.

The team held on for as long as they could, cutting a 14-0 lead against Linfield to 14-7 after a gutsy 4th and goal call. It resulted in a great play from quarterback Mike Husni who dashed to his right, then dashed to his left when pressure was coming and delivered a very sharp pass to Elijah Rehm on the last play of the first half.

That gave Rowan all the momentum going into the half.

In the second half, the Profs tied the game on a 30 yard run from Messiah Devine, but things went downhill after that.

The defense played well, considering they were playing a quarterback who was clearly very experienced and very comfortable in the pocket, only giving up 14 points in the first half and intercepted the ball twice. While the coaches should be encouraged by what they saw from the defensive unit, but they still have things to work on.

The offense, however, had a bit of a tough time. After not being able to get anything going until the final drive of the first half, I was hoping to see that momentum they gained carry deep into the second half.

The offense turned the ball over three times, including one in the red zone and another on their own 30.

The final score, 35-14 Linfield, was hard on everyone.

Despite the struggles on offense, though, I still think the score doesn’t tell the whole story. I believe the coaches should be encouraged by what they saw from the offense, as well as their sophomore quarterback, because while they only scored 14 points, they moved the ball much better in the second half than they did in the first and the team is still very young.

Even with the 0-2 start, I do believe that the team is headed in the right direction. I was impressed that for a young team they were able to hang in with more experienced teams like Widener and Linfield.

The season is still early, and It’s only been 2 games. There is still plenty of time, but the time is now to forget about it and move on to the next one.
