Over the weekend, the Rowan women’s indoor track and field team competed in the two-day All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Championships (AARTFC). Out of 40 teams, Rowan finished third overall.
“I think we are really putting it together,” Amanthy Sosa Caceres said. “I think that we are all one big family which helps. I am just really glad that we are beginning to build momentum to what is hopefully a good spring season.”
The foursome teams were the highlights of both days for the Profs. The 4×200 quartet containing Jasmine Broadway, Sosa Caceres, Kat Pedersen and Molly Lodge finished first in the event and broke the school record with a time of 1:41.93. The team broke their own previous record which they set this season at the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship.
“I am so excited that we broke the record again,” Sosa Caceres said. “It is really fun to break with the team we got. We all come out here every day and train really hard. We were all happy with the end result.”
Head Coach, Derick “Ringo” Adamson, was surprised with the way the 4×200 team performed.
“I told them going into the meet, fight like it is your last meet,” Ringo said. “And when it is over if you feel like we accomplished something, then great. Did I see a meet record coming? No I did not, but I am of course happy about it.”
While the team has lacked depth throughout the season, it has created opportunities for other runners on the team to step up.
The entire 4×200 team competed in multiple events for the team and were able to score for their team. Pedersen, Broadway, and Lodge competed in the 4×400 and finished second overall while Sosa Caceres competed in the distance medley foursome along with Gabriella Pagano, Robin Collura, and Anna Sasse. The distance medley had their best time of the season and finished eighth in their event.
“Being able to do what my coaches need me to do is really important,” Sosa Caceres said. “I am happy to be able to help my coaches. I just want to be able to help my team in any way I can.”
The season is over for most of the team, except for the 4×400 team. Their season will end with the NCAA Division III Championships as Nevaeh Lorjuste, Pedersen, Broadway and Lodge will compete in the event. Lorjuste will also compete in the 400 meters at the event.
“To start off I really just want our team to qualify in the trials,” Ringo said. “If we are in after the trial runs, all hell is gonna break loose. Most of those teams running those fast times that got in will not be able to do it again. What the other teams do not realize is that you have to run 400 twice. There are the trials and then the finals. Most teams do not have the endurance to do both. I think we have the stamina. We always train endurance for occurrences just like this.”
