Another Rowan lacrosse record was snapped by Elaina Corson during a Rowan win, 20-8, over Kean on Saturday at the Rowan Soccer and Lacrosse Complex. One week after breaking Rowan’s all-time goals scored record of 250, the all-time career points record of 311 was broken, too. The record has stood for 31 years, originally set by Colleen Smith in 1995.
After breaking the record on an assist to Madi Rothwein with nine seconds before halftime, her best friend, Leah Corkhill, was the first person to give Corson a hug.
“Leah’s always the first person who comes up and hugs me, and cheers the loudest for me,” said Corson. “It’s just super special having her by my side.”
Corkhill emphasized the moment being just as special on her side.
“She’s my best friend, so I always want to be the one to hug her and give her all the support I can. She deserves it,” said Corkhill. “It’s an exciting, record breaking assist. I am always her top supporter.”
While Corson’s job is to score goals, Corkhill’s job is to shut them down. That role was nearly flipped with 12:25 left in Saturday’s game, as Corkhill got a one-on-one breakaway, and a chance to score her first goal since freshman year.
Fans stood up with bated breath to see if the senior from Absecon, New Jersey, could provide an unforgettable senior day moment. Unfortunately, the shot was saved by Kean goalkeeper Brooke Sztenderowicz.
“I feel like a goal would have been great on my senior day, but there’s more games to come,” said Corkhill. “It’s coming. You better wait.”
After a scoreless opening quarter from both teams, Kean was the first team on the board, scoring 57 seconds into the second quarter from Emilie Schultz, who also took the draws against Rothwein.
It was Rothwein who responded 31 seconds later, her twelfth free position goal of the season.
The game knotted up again at 2-2 until the 6:13 mark in the first half, when Alexis Lowry scored her first of a five-goal day, a career high for the junior.
“My teammates were honestly working really hard today,” said Lowry. “My coach said to me the day before, ‘Give your best effort for your teammates,’ and I think we all did that today. They worked hard, so I could have my opportunities, I worked hard for them so they have their opportunities.”
Lowry’s goal was the first of a 5-0 run in the half, with Corson scoring three, and finishing with Rothwein’s goal on Corson’s record-breaking assist.
Corson and Lowry combined for three goals coming out of the halftime break, a ten-minute rest that included player-led adjustments on offense.
“I asked them what they wanted to run, because it didn’t seem like anything was really working,” said Delaney. “They called the play they wanted to run. So I was like, ‘Now you have to run it with conviction.’ And they did.”
The Profs outscored Kean 13-6 in the second half, finishing the game off on a Fiona Lockhart at the final buzzer.
Now, Rowan will turn to the final week of the regular season, facing Montclair State on Wednesday and The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) on Saturday.
“Everyone wants to focus on Saturday,” said Delaney. “I don’t care about Saturday at all. Saturday is what it is. You can’t underperform against a team like Montclair, who you know is coming in to beat you. My focus and their focus had to be on [Kean] and had to be on Wednesday.”
