WILMINGTON, Del. – The Wilmington Blue Rocks defeated the Asheville Tourists, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium. The Blue Rocks won five out of the six games against Asheville.
Things were looking dull for Wilmington, as in the top of the seventh inning, Tourists first baseman Drew Brutcher hit a three-run home run to put Asheville ahead, 5-2.
But just like the previous night, the Blue Rocks were able to spark some seventh-inning magic to put themselves ahead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Tourists pitcher Nate Wohlgemuth took the mound and hit the first two Wilmington batters he saw, that being catcher Matt Suggs and right fielder Teo Banks. Shortstop Devin Fitz-Gerald also drew a walk.
First baseman Ethan Petry lined a ball to right field to score Suggs, and Banks was thrown out going for third.
And once again, center fielder Elijah Green found himself in a big-time moment. And Green delivered once again, crushing a ball to right field for a three-run home run.
“I’ve just been sticking to my routine, and hanging around with the guys, and continuing to do whatever I gotta do to get ready for the game,” said Green.
Manager Ted Tom says Green always puts in hard work.
“I see more consistency out of him, and a guy that works his tail off,” said Tom. “He deserves every bit of success he gets.”
Green, like many others on the team, praises the clubhouse.
“It’s super fun,” said Green. “We’re always competing at whatever we’re doing.”
Left-handed reliever Pablo Aldonis was able to close out the game in the ninth.
Over the course of the series against Asheville, Wilmington put up 46 runs.
“We don’t let the first or second at-bats through the order kind of affect us,” said Blue Rocks hitting coach Hudson Byorick. “If they go well, awesome, but the second or third time through has really been clicking for us.”
The Blue Rocks look to go on a long, two week roadtrip, as they’ll be heading to Spartanburg, South Carolina, to face the Hub City Spartanburgers. As well as Winston-Salem, North Carolina to face the Winston-Salem Dash.
“We need to embrace the road trip,” said Tom. “It’s two weeks, 12 games on the trip, and it’s gonna be a great opportunity for us to mingle a little bit and get to know each other a lot better.”
