Ry and Howie’s, Glassboro’s newest sandwich shop, is a student life hotspot for those who want to grab a classic hoagie. This week, I visited the new establishment with two of The Whit’s editors, Sarah Shockey and Mattie Mac Kay, and tried three sandwiches, their signature sauce, and some onion rings.
To start, when you enter the restaurant, you are met with the counter and kitchen area that is separate from the dining area. Customers can find this a nice touch since those who are enjoying the food are not bombarded with the noise that comes from a busy kitchen. The decor was also nicely done. Many sandwich shops can be outdated or seem like they were designed without much care, but the space seemed to be carefully curated, so it’s not overwhelming for customers, and still has that sandwich shop touch.
Mac Kay enjoyed a basket of onion rings and a chicken cutlet sub with lettuce, tomato, chipotle mayo, and American cheese. This seems like a simple sandwich, but it is important that places like these are able to make staple sandwiches because specialty sandwiches don’t always sell, especially in a business where classic is considered better. The sandwich was a delicious mix of classic taste with some spice from the chipotle mayo and received a 9.8/10 rating, the consensus was that it was delicious but would have been better with bacon.
Shockey ordered a chicken cutlet sandwich with broccoli rob, roasted red peppers, and provolone. The sandwich had the perfect chicken cutlet, thin and nicely breaded, which meshed well with the broccoli rob, and red peppers. The sandwich had the perfect amount of spice that Shockey looks for in her sandwiches, and paired with the sauce made by Ry and Howie’s, it tied the sandwich together into a perfect 10. The only note was that the sandwich would have been even more elevated with sharp provolone instead of regular provolone.
As for myself, I enjoyed the restaurant’s signature meatball sub that had provolone cheese, marinara sauce, and meatballs. The sandwich was the perfect size and was incredibly filling, with about six meatballs, and wasn’t over- or under-filled with ingredients. My only note was the amount of sauce, which felt overpowering at times, may have evened out the sandwich to a 10 if the sauce wasn’t spilling out the sides constantly. Other than that, this sandwich was a 9/10, and I would highly recommend it.
Overall, Ry and Howie’s is a 10/10, and any student or local to Glassboro should visit the spot and enjoy one of their classic sandwiches and enjoy the atmosphere at this great new restaurant here in town.
