There are a number of professors here at Rowan University. Some professors enjoy wearing casual wear and being comfortable, while others prefer the old-fashioned three-piece suit. Fashion can be a way that professors express themselves, just like any student, and this week, a few professors spoke about their outfit choices, and they had great answers.
The first one is Professor Sean O’leary of the radio, television & film department. Typically O’leary is in jeans and whatever graphic t-shirt he is feeling that day. As a film professor, O’leary sometimes has a fun t-shirt with a movie reference on it, and that is how he incorporates the subject he is so passionate about into his everyday outfit for work.
“I try to dress comfortably, but because I work with the equipment all day and tend to get dirty, I don’t normally dress up too often, however if I am teaching a class that day, I may wear a nicer shirt,” said O’Leary.
The second professor who reviewed his outfit was Professor Carl Hausman, one of the long-standing professors at Rowan. Professor Hausman has been working for Rowan since 1997 and has been rocking the same look since, suits. He teaches a few classes this semester, and every class he is wearing his signature suit; the only thing that changes is the color of his tie. He is one of the only professors who dresses to such a high standard, and students appreciate the care he puts into his look. It makes them feel important and worth his time and nicest suits.
“I do not understand casual clothing, and I don’t understand how to wear it. I do not understand how to dress casually,” said Hausman. “I like to show people that I take this seriously and that I am dressed like I have shown up to do a job.”
Another professor who is always dressed up is Katherine Harman, who teaches in the College of Communications. Every class, Professor Harman chooses her outfits to be an expression of her style, and she always chooses to have fun with what she wears. During autumn, she is able to get more creative with shirts and have fun patterns on short-sleeve button-downs thanks to the warm weather. Professor Harman doesn’t let the cold weather stop her; she wears funky socks and bright colors to ensure her personality still shines through her outfit choices.
“I always wear vans and I like to wear a lot of different styles. I love to wear different colors, but I love socks, and I always feel like my fun shoes and socks are the most important part of my outfit,” said Harman.
Sometimes it can be hard when the weather is dreary and gray for professors to keep students’ spirits lifted. However, a good outfit can do a lot and show students that professors don’t just say they really care about coming to teach, they truly mean it.
