The Profs treated Saturday’s doubleheader like it was batting practice, as they swept the day with, 9-4, and, 24-3, victories over the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders. Rowan now owns a 21-3 overall record and sustain their undefeated run at the Rowan Baseball Field.
“We always knew we had it us, it’s about time we found it,” Nick Struble said. “You know, we’re finding ways to win games, and [we] haven’t even hit our full stride yet.”
In the span of 24 hours, the Profs saw 62 runs come across home plate in what has been quite the offensive explosion. Since defeating York in a low scoring affair, 2-1, on Monday, Rowan set a new program runs record against Rutger-Camden a day before Saturday’s successes.
“You know, yesterday was awesome, it was a great win, but if you lose today that doesn’t mean anything,” head coach Mike Dickson said.
In Game 1, fifth year ace Zach Coluccio threw 98 pitches in seven innings, allowing just five hits and two earned runs. Senior captain Mason Dorsey, who is second on the team with a .372 batting average, continued to be a threatening nine hole hitter as he got two hits and walked twice.
“Being a nine hole, the most important thing is getting on base,” Dorsey said. “I don’t care if the guy makes an error, if I get a hit, anything, so if I get on base that’s a hit for me.”
Another senior captain took over in the second half of the doubleheader, with Struble’s three-run double putting the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth. Rowan’s first baseman has knocked in ten runs in his last three ballgames.
While the bats drew many eyes, ten seniors and their families garnered attention as they stepped onto the diamond on Senior Day. Even in the midst of a dominant season, Rowan made sure to recognize its most established players to start off the doubleheader.
“I remember, like, it was yesterday when I was a freshman lining up for the seniors walking out, and now it’s my turn to walk out,” Struble said. “Can’t thank these guys enough for being the guys that they are, and it’s a blessing every day.”
Playing all four years in brown and gold pinstripes, Dorsey and Struble have carried the responsibility of being two of the team’s three captains this spring.
“Guys like Jason Morgan, Tyler Cannon, Phil Sedalis, like Mike Shannon, all of them guys they kind of laid the foundation,” Dorsey said. “We got named captain for a reason, like, you just got to keep being yourself.”
Rowan now sits first in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) after going 4-0 against both Rutgers teams this weekend. Winning a conference title for the first time since 2021, in addition to College World Series aspirations, remains a subtle thought for the Profs.
“If we can just come out here and worry about, you know, pitch by pitch, play by play, day by day… that’s really all we got to worry about,” Dickson said. “Any of those championships that come along with that comes along with playing consistent baseball and having the ball bounce your way sometimes.”
Glassboro will see more baseball action this Wednesday, when the Profs host Haverford in a non-conference game that was rescheduled from March 5.
