MONTCLAIR, N.J. — A five-goal outing for Fiona Lockhart highlighted Rowan’s effort in a, 21-4, win for Rowan over Montclair State on Wednesday, solidifying a ten-game win streak and staying an unbeaten 4-0 in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play.
364 days prior, in Rowan’s regular season meeting with Montclair in Glassboro, Lockhart suffered an injury that left her with a broken arm, a surgery date, and the rest of a junior season stripped away.
“It was really hard,” said Lockhart. “Everything happened so fast. I broke my arm and they said ‘Ok, so you’re getting surgery for the first time ever next week.’ And then I had my follow-up, and they were like ‘Okay, you’ll come in for surgery tomorrow.’ I was literally in surgery when we were playing Montclair [State] for the NJAC semifinal.”
Lockhart scored back-to-back goals at 3:35 and 2:38 marks in the first quarter, pushing Rowan’s lead to 3-0 and 4-0 at the time.
Rowan dominated the second quarter, scoring nine unanswered before the Red Hawks finally replied with a Cara McCartney goal with 44 seconds left to halftime.
The Profs’ 9-0 consisted of three goals apiece from Alexis Lowry and Trish Gillen, two from Yasmin Harris and one from Madi Rothwein.
By the halftime break, Rowan had a 15-2 advantage.
“That’s the best game this team’s probably played all year,” said head coach Lindsay Delaney. “In terms of handling the physicality, being above the play, making changes on the fly, understanding the situation. It’s the best game they’ve had.”
Junior Olivia Wisor netted her fifth goal of the season, while freshman Mia Pezzato scored the second goal of her season and career.
After missing on a breakaway opportunity to score on Saturday’s senior day win over Kean, senior defender Leah Corkhill finally cashed in on her first goal since freshman year, and third of her career.
“They get super excited and those are the moments they’ve been waiting for,” said Delaney. “For me, I think all the other things like that check she had coming down the field was a better moment. But, she loved it, and I was happy for her.”
The Profs won the draw control battle 18-7, with Madi Rothwein securing 15 draw controls to add to a season-tally of 124. Rothwein needs just eight more draw controls to break the single-season record for draw controls, set at 131 by Shannon O’Brien in 2013
“I thought Madi did a great job,” said Delaney. “I knew [Montclair’s] player was more physical, so it’s not necessarily ‘she goes for the ball,’ she goes for your stick check. Madi missed that part of practice yesterday where we brought that out, so she had to figure out how to adjust to it. I thought she did a wonderful job adjusting to it.”
The win secures at least the second seed in the NJAC tournament for Rowan, meaning they’ll get to host the semifinals. But, a win over The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) on Saturday would secure the top seed for the conference tournament, and would be the first win over the Lions since 2010, and just the tenth in program history.
“I said before we have an answer for everything,” said Lockhart. “We just [need to] keep practicing the same way we have been taking it to each other at practicing and getting ready for the big game.”
Rowan and TCNJ are slated to meet at the Rowan Soccer & Lacrosse Complex on Saturday at 1 p.m., the 78th all-time meeting between the two, dating back to 1968.
