WILMINGTON, Del. – Two of the Wilmington Blue Rocks’ fresh faces had a field day Tuesday in a, 10-2, win over the Asheville Tourists at Frawley Stadium.

The Blue Rocks started the game down by one, but 20-year-old shortstop Devin Fitz-Gerald tied up the game with a home run in the bottom of the third. A triple play by the Florida native brought in two runs later in the game during the bottom of the sixth. He finished the game with a home run, a triple, and a walk. 

“Every day is a new game. It’s a long season, and there’s going to be ups and downs, and it’s all about just having confidence,” said Fitz-Gerald. “I felt like this past off day was a reset of just finding myself again”

Fitz-Gerald wasn’t the only Blue Rock to shine offensively. Tuesday’s game was Nationals’ top prospect Ronny Cruz’s first game in High-A, and the infielder put on a show. 

The 19-year-old Dominican Republic native got his first hit in Frawley Stadium in the bottom of the third inning. Following his hit, Cruz saw an opening and darted to third when Luis Rodriguez of the Tourists made a pitching error. 

Cruz finished the game with a triple, one run batted in, two runs scored, and a stolen base.

“It’s fun to watch those young guys play, and it’s those two guys, but there’s a bunch of other young guys that are fun to watch as well,” said manager Ted Tom. 

Riley Maddox was the starting pitcher on Tuesday’s game, but after a meeting at the mound during the fourth inning, Merrick Baldo took his place and faced the batters. Maddox went on and pitched two scoreless innings.

“I was throwing that in the zone…which was good, and just filling up the zone with all my pitches,” said Maddox. 

The Blue Rocks are set to face the Asheville Tourists in their second game of the series Wednesday morning at Frawley Stadium.
