WILMINGTON, Del. (6/25) – The 34-36 Wilmington Blue Rocks battled 13 innings after a five run deficit to give them their first win of the series against the 45-24 Frederick Keys on Thursday night at Frawley Stadium. 

The Blue Rocks struggled offensively in the first two games of the series, totaling four hits over the 18 innings and continued to struggle the first eight innings of Thursday’s match-up. Despite being down by five in the ninth, a two run home run by Jacob Walsh put the Blue Rocks on the board.

“Felt good to have a lot of guys around me who were really good, and makes it a lot easier… We were just kind of trying to take it one at bat, one step at a time,” said Walsh.

Before Walsh’s home run, the Blue Rocks were down by five with four total hits. Walsh’s home run was a catalyst for an active late game offense as the Blue Rocks were able to score five in the ninth to tie the game up. 

The teams fought through four extra innings, but the Blue Rocks prevailed off of a sacrifice flyball by Elijah Green, ending the game at 9-8. 

“Just knowing the situation, runners on first and third, no outs, so they’re trying to put someone on the ground, so try to see something up and hit the ball in the air,” Green explained while talking about his game winning at-bat.

This game wasn’t just the first win of the series for the Blue Rocks, but also served as Mitchell Boe’s first win as an interim manager. Boe, typically the team’s defensive coach, has moved from first base coach to third base coach, stepping in place of the absent Ted Tom. 

“It’s a really cool situation, you know. My parents were telling me take a moment, take it in, and all that stuff, and I don’t think I have had until this moment right here,” said Boe. “So, pretty cool. It’s awesome. It’s a fun way to do it too.”

The Blue Rocks will face the Frederick Keys for the fourth game of the series on Friday night at Frawley Stadium.
