The San Francisco 49ers defeated the New York Jets 32-19 last night on Monday Night Football. Here are some things that we learned about both teams last night.
Jets’ run defense needs to improve: Yesterday the 49ers were without Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey, one of the best running backs in the NFL, was dealing with a calf/Achilles injury. As a result, Jordan Mason stepped up big time. In his first game in the NFL, Mason ran for 147 yards and a touchdown. The Jets also couldn’t get stops on third down when needed, all leading to the 49ers’ 32 points.
Aaron Rodgers is back: Last spring the Jets traded for four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers. Last season was the most anticipated season for the Jets. Unfortunately, four plays into last season, Rodgers tore his Achilles. That ruined the Jets’ hopes last season. The Jets had the worst red zone offense in NFL history, scoring only 32 percent of the time last year, which was the lowest red zone percentage since the 2012 Kansas City Chiefs. Fans were waiting for a year to see what Rodgers did and he did not disappoint. He threw a touchdown pass to Allen Lazard on a free play and showed off his magic with his throw to Garrett Wilson. However, the offense wasn’t perfect. Rodgers threw an interception off a tipped ball from Deommodore Lenior and was picked off by Demetrius Flanigan. Breece Hall also fumbled the ball. But when the Jets offense is going, this is one of the best Jets offenses in years.
The 49ers are the best team in the NFC: Since 2019, the 49ers have been the best team in the NFC. The 49ers made the NFC Championship four times in the past five years and have also made two Super Bowls during that timespan. Last night, the Jets looked like the more dominant team. The 49ers offensive line played great and Mason played great. Deebo Samuel scored a touchdown and Jake Moody went six-for-six on field goal tries. If the 49ers keep up this pace, they could be one of the top teams in the NFC and make the Super Bowl. The next opponent the 49ers play is the Minnesota Vikings. Sam Darnold played promisingly against the Giants, but the Niners’ defense could cause Darnold to commit some turnovers.
