Students and families joined representatives from 17 different chapters of Greek Life, backed by their respective councils, in a night of dancing, salutes, and celebration of ethnic chapters.
The event was held in Pfleeger Hall on Thursday, Nov. 13th. Fraternities and sororities gathered their best dancers and performed on stage in front of the packed concert hall.
There were also information tables available for anyone interested in dipping their toes into Greek Life, with 17 tables filled with information packets, merchandise, stickers, and more. Many alumni returned to discuss their experiences with the newer generation.
The event allowed for socializing and networking during the beginning of the event, as well as a DJ playing live mixes.
The main performances circled around an initial salute, which is a routine memorized by the Greeks to show dedication to their organizations, followed by a short introduction or skit, and ending with a dance number.
Graduate Coordinator for Fraternity and Sorority Life, Michael Buckman, was in charge of planning and managing Meet The Greeks.
“Meet The Greeks is an every semester event hosted by the Rowan University Fraternity and Sorority Life Office, where we bring our NPHC (National Pan-Hellenic Council) and GCOC (Greek Cultural Organizations Council) here to show off their culture in the organizations based off their history and pride,” Buckman said.
The event focused on the ethnic fraternities and sororities, giving them a chance to make themselves heard.
“This is where we show off the things we do,” said Laila Underwood, biological science major and president of Sigma Gamma Rho. “It’s time to have fun, be a community, be together, and put on a show for everybody.”
The crowd loved the performances, and each one was bookended by large amounts of cheers and applause. Every so often, the performers on stage would enlist help from their brothers and sisters in the crowd for their chants, which were spirited and enthusiastic.
There was no winner for the event, as it was not a competition. Instead, it was a showcase of the immense talent within Greek Life, from choreography to crowd work. It also allowed the Greeks to show off their ability to work as a team.
Brandon Baker, who graduated from Rowan in 2019 with a degree in finance, was one of many alumni who attended on behalf of their organizations.
“I come back here, as an alumni, to support my fraternity. It’s also nice seeing the other orgs and what they are doing nowadays. It’s cool, y’know?” Baker said.
