As many celebrities achieve a certain level of fame, the borderline between fans and the celebrity themselves starts to get carried away. What would start out as admiration for the singer would slowly turn into something more intense. Especially with how technology is today, it has become more amplified, scary, and dangerous.
This would pop up within many eras of music. Many stars would go through similar situations with their fan bases.
A heartbreaking example of this is Christina Grimmie. Both a singer and songwriter, Christina was known for her beautiful vocals and covers on the piano. She’s built her dedicated fan base through YouTube. While signing autographs for fans after a concert in Orlando, Florida, she was shot to death by an obsessed fan.
Her death serves as a devastating reminder of how these parasocial relationships can escalate when these boundaries are crossed.
In recent times, the global girl group sensation, Katseye, is another group that has fallen victim to this. The group was formed through the Netflix reality show, “Dream Academy.” Known for their singing, viral dances, and hilarious personalities, they took the internet by storm.
Many of the members would face harassment by obsessed fans in their DM’s or apps like TikTok. Some parasocial fans would stalk them when out with friends, restaurants the group would go to eat after a show, and even their ride back home. What feels like support for the group, fans can quickly become an unselling and dangerous space for the artists themselves.
Singers would then have to place boundaries on fans because of stalking, or knowing so much information about them. Usually, they’d call them out on social media, telling their fans to calm down and understand that they’re human too.
Global popstar, Taylor Swift, isn’t unfamiliar with this either. She’s experienced various forms of stalking, including a man breaking into her New York apartment. It’s caused her so much trauma from the incident that she’s had to move numerous times due to her privacy and safety. Her situation showcases how even the most successful and popular artists can feel vulnerable in a space where personal boundaries are violated.
Situations like these showcase how dangerous these para-social relationships can be, especially when boundaries are crossed and ignored.
While many fans would feel connected to celebrities through their music, social media, interviews, and even personality, the connection is not mutual.
Fans may believe they “know” an artist through their music, but the reality is that we as fans don’t know these celebrities personally, and they’re not obligated to share every part of their life with us.
Celebrities are still people who deserve the right to have privacy and safety and respect in their homes and in general, and in their everyday lives.
In general, the issue has grown into a bigger problem over time with pop culture, especially in terms of capability, the separate admiration of a celebrity versus the entitlement.
Regardless, supporting any artist of any art form should never be at the cost of their well-being or life.
This, among many reasons, is why boundaries in pop culture are important. Not just for celebrities, but for all people.
