WILMINGTON, Del. — No-hit through five innings, the Wilmington Blue Rocks scored all seven of their runs in the sixth and seventh innings to beat the Hub City Spartanburgers, 7-4, Friday night at Frawley stadium.
T.J. White tied the game 3-to-3 in the bottom sixth with a two-run home run and the flood gates opened up after that. The home run was White’s first of the season and came at a crucial point as, the Blue Rocks looked for any spark after being silenced early.
“It always feels good to get that first one out of the way,” White said. “We’re just going to keep building off this and keep pushing every day.”
After a three-run sixth inning, the spark carried over into the seventh, where the Rocks added four more runs to put the game out of reach for Hub City. Angel Feliz delivered an RBI to break the no hitter. Elijah Green worked a walk with the bases loaded, Hunter Hines went 2-for-4 and drove in a run to cap off the rally.
“I think it’s guys grinding out good at-bats, passing the baton to the next guy,” manager Ted Tom said. “As the game progresses, our at-bats got better.”
Tom also pointed to the team’s ability to stay process-oriented rather than chasing results.
“Stop focusing on ‘I have to get a hit,’” Tom said. “Just put together good at-bats. We had some really good swings, especially later in the game.”
Green has had a great series to this point. Two home runs, three RBIs, and is 4-for-11 including a walk.
“Just sticking to my routine and leaning on my coaches and teammates,” Green said. “They believe in me, and I’m just trying to start earlier and let the game come to me.”
Green added that the team’s confidence has continued to grow as the season progresses.
“It’s just trusting the work we’re putting in every day,” he said.
On the mound, starter Bryan Polanco allowed three runs on three hits, but he only allowed one walk and struck out seven, to keep the game in reach for Wilmington.
“Very efficient, the best he [Polnaco] has been all year,” Tom said. “Bryan [Polanco] gave us a chance and kept us right there.”
Wilmington improves to, 7-5, on the season and stopped a three game slide with the win today. Wilmington and Hub City play game five of the six game set Saturday at Frawley Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:05.
