Rowan (18-5-2) hit the ground running in the new year with a dominant, 6-0, win over Saint Joseph’s University’s DII team on Saturday, Jan. 17, at Hollydell Ice Arena in Glassboro. The second period is where the Profs took over the game and didn’t look back, scoring three goals, two of them coming in a matter of 20 seconds.
The first goal in the second came from freshman forward Anthony Cassese, notching his first goal at home.
“I figured if I could sneak behind everybody, I could get a backdoor pass,” Cassese said. “It came right to me. It was a great thing.”
Scoring wasn’t the only thing Rowan excelled at, as they went 4/4 on the penalty kill throughout the entire game, shutting down the Hawks’ chances.
“You gotta do it for your teammates in the box,” Cassese said. “When you kill the penalty, it brings the whole team up, and it just keeps the momentum going.”
Senior captain and winger Nick Thomas further expressed how great it is to have a great penalty kill unit.
“They help us a lot, considering we’ve been taking too many penalties. They’ve been keeping us in the game for sure,” said Thomas.
Rowan continued to build on the goal by Cassese.
Thomas would bury a goal, going top shelf, and just 20 seconds later, freshman forward Riley Capecci would get on the board with a goal of his own.
Sophomore goalie Bobby Kennedy was also a huge factor in the win, shutting out the Hawks’ offense.
The goalie’s family was in attendance.
“It’s big to be able to come out and do that tonight in front of my family,” Kennedy said.
